Service Description

Session dates: 1/27 - 4/28( 14 weeks) Prerequisite: Level 4 or level 5 or equivalent of 1-2 years of glass experience Bottles and Spheres In this session of ISW- intermediate skills workshop, we will be covering back to basics with spheres, bottles and bottle stoppers. Section 1 will be an emphasis on gathering, how your set up effects your shape and how to efficiently utilize your partner to maintain heat and shape. All of these will be put into use by making spheres of all sizes. Section 2 will cover bottles progressing in size from a small bottle perfume size bottle to a short necked oil bottle to a long necked decanter. Emphasis in section 2 will be how different set ups naturally lead into different shapes of bottles. Section 3 will wrap up by teaching how to make a blown bottle top and a solid bottle stoppers to fit into the bottles made in section 2. This is a weekly class running 14 weeks on Tuesday from 6:30-9:30 or Thurs 6:30-9:30pm and Sunday from 12:30-3:30pm. All 3 classes have the same curriculum which will include demonstrations in each class followed by hands on practice time for the students. Students may switch to the Sun/ Thurs class based on availability if you cannot make a class on Sun. Students can either take the full 14 week course or take sections. ISW blowslot package available for enrolled students to add on to the class: https://www.publicglass.org/isw-bundle-blowslots Section 1: Sphere Clinic Week 1 Students make small sphere by gathering, air marver and jackline ( no block/ marver) Week 2 Double Dip spheres- controlling how far the bubble pops into the gather- utilizing furnace heat Week 3 Starter bubble + 1 gather over sphere should be a little bigger than the week before - 6-8in Week 4 working bigger as an assistant - how to take a heat for a gaffer and bring it back to the bench Week 5 working bigger as the gaffer: How to tell the assistant to take heats for you, Week 6 making a large sphere 8-10 in using multiple assistants to help take heats and shield Section 2: Pulling Bottles Week 1 Double dip small bottle on pipe using round jacks- show mexican punty Week 2 6-8in bottle short to medium neck (2-4in) on the pipe only Week 3 6-8in short neck bottle pipe and punty Week 4 Each student makes 1 long neck bottle from start to finish Week 5 Design your own bottle Section 3: Put a stopper on that Week 1 Blown Bottle stopper Week 2 Solid Bottle Stopper Week 3 Students design your own stopper
