Session dates: Jan 25th- March 1st( 6 weeks) Prerequisite is Level 4 or level 5 or equivalent of 1-2 years of glass experience This is section 1 of 3 Section 1 of ISW- intermediate skills workshop, will be covering back to basics with spheres. There will be an emphasis on gathering, how your set up effects your shape and how to efficiently utilize your partner to maintain heat and shape. All of these will be put into use by making spheres of all sizes. This is weekly class running 6 weeks on Tues from 6:30-9:30 or Thurs 6:30-9:30pm and Sunday from 12:30-3:30pm. All 3 classes have the same curriculum which will include demonstrations in each class followed by hands on practice time for the students. Students may switch to the Tues/ Thurs class based on availability if you cannot make a class on sun. Syllabus Section 1: Sphere Clinic Week 1 Sun Jan 25, Tues Jan 27, and Thurs Jan 29 Demo: 1hr 30 min: basic set up for sphere ( 30 min), cylinder ( 30 min) and cone ( 30 min) - goal of equal walled thickness with extra glass just on the bottom Exercise: Students make small sphere by gathering, air marver and jackline ( no block/ marver) Week 2 Sun Feb 01, Tues Feb 03, and Thurs Feb 05 Demo:Double Dip spheres - going over double dip- controlling how far the bubble pops into the gather- utilizing furnace heat Exercise: double dip gather medium size sphere ( 4-5 in) Week 3 Sun Feb 08, Tues Feb 10, and Thurs Feb 12 Demo: Starter bubble + 1 gather over sphere ( 8 block): go over ideal starter bubble and blocking the shape to make medium sphere- should be a little bigger than the week before - 6-8in Week 4 Sun Feb 15, Tues Feb 17, and Thurs Feb 19 Demo: working bigger as an assistant - demo ergonomics from yolk to bench, bench to yolk, yolk to marver lifting with legs- pivoting from the waste, keeping big gathers close to your body, go over turning bigger class on the yolk and at the bench safely, go over when and how to shield with 1 or 2 paddles- jackline, trimming, opening piece on the punty Week 5 Sun Feb 22, Tues Feb 24, and Thurs Feb 26 Demo: working bigger as the gaffer: How to tell the assistant to take heats for you, how to take over turning at the bench, how hard to squeeze on a jackline, how to use the paper to catch the glass Week 6 Sun Mar 01, Tues Mar 03, and Thurs Mar 05 Demo: 30 min- making a large sphere ( 10-12 block) about 8-10 in Demo a large sphere on the pipe using multiple students to help take heats and shield
