Intro to Lighting for Glassblowers

Service Description
Learn the mechanics of making your own glass lighting from blowing to coldworking to electronics. Starting off, the class will discuss the parameters of how to design and assemble light fixtures, and how to cohesively incorporate those parameters into the hot shop to create your pieces. There will be demos at the beginning of each class, and plenty of space to bring your own ideas to fruition. The class will discuss light quality and how to use color in glass to create different effects in the final pieces. The instructor will teach the basics of building mounts, fixtures, and wiring needed to create your own light fixtures from scratch. First 3 classes will be in the hotshop and the last class will be in the coldshop to do any finishing work and in the warmshop to build the wiring and fixtures. No previous coldwork experience will be needed. Limited color included in the class as well as all of the wiring and fixture parts. The class will run on 2 benches with 3 students on each bench. The class maxes out at 6 students. There will be an additional guest lecture from Architect Tony Levi about how lighting is used within architecture over zoom to get those creative juices going. The lecture will happen on the first week of July. This is a 4 week class x 4 hour per class from July 9-30, 6-10pm with additional guest lecture on the first week of July- date tbd Instructor: Sam Schumaker Rocket Glass Works https://www.rocketglassworks.com/ Breakdown: Session 1: 1 hour: Intro to lamp parts and construction, overview of class, discussion of color theory 3 hours: blow time making project 1 (Pendant lights) Session 2: 30 minutes discussion of process for project 2 (table lamp) 3 hrs blow time making parts 30 minutes discussion of project 3 Session 3: 30 minutes planning/discussion of project 3 (student-designed project) 3.5 hours blow time Session 4: 30 minutes: intro to cold shop 1 hour cold-working 2.5 hours assembly of all 3 projects

If a cancellation occurs 10 days or more before the start of class, please submit a written request to operations@publicglass.org as soon as you know of a possible conflict. Your account will be credited with the cost of the class. You can apply this credit to a future class, our online shop, or event. Please email operations@publicglass.org to use the credit on your account. Excessive rescheduling will result in an administrative fee. As a small nonprofit, our goal is to keep access to the studios affordable and to employ the independent artists who have committed to teach you. Monetary refunds are issued at the discretion of management. In the rare case that we are able to issue a refund, our processing platforms will keep a minimum of 10% non-refundable fees.
