  • You can buy a gift certificate which is the perfect gift by calling 415.671.4916 or by emailing admin@publicglass.org
  • Workshops and supplementary classes are designated as being 50 or higher in a specific series, ie 150 or 175 would be a workshop within the same series.

Description:

Our most popular workshop — everyone leaves with a smile on their face and a new appreciation for glass art! This workshop is perfect for those interested in sampling hot glass and its potential without the five-week commitment. We begin the day with an introduction to your fabulous instructors, a review of the basics of shop safety, then move right into paperweights. You finish the day by making blown drinking tumblers with assistance from one of our awesome instructors. The 1-day workshop is the perfect way to experience something new and exciting. Plus it’s a lot of fun to take with a friend, family member, or partner.

Title: Glassblowing 1A

Description:

Basics for Beginners
4 week series
If you have ever wanted to try glassblowing, this is your chance! Learn the basics in a closely supervised and supportive team environment. You will improve your skills and gain confidence through practice and coaching. You will gather glass from the furnace, and use tools to shape and manipulate the glass. Teamwork through communication is emphasized while strengthening skill level. There will be discussion of basic glass chemistry and the principles of heating, cooling, the concept gravity and their effects on glass. By the end of this class, you will have learned the skills needed and demonstrate them by implementing a drinking tumbler of your very own.

Description:

Basics for Beginners II
4 week series
This class is for the glass blowers that have completed Glass Blowing 1 or 1 A and are interested in continuing their glass experience. this class is now a prerequisite to entering  into Glass 2. This 4 week class will focus on refining any and all techniques covered in part 1 of this series The emphasize will be gathering glass perfectly, using the heat and tools to move your glass in a controlled fashion and expanding on shape and color applications.

Title: Punty Workshop

Description:

Empowering the Punty?
This Workshop is designed to strengthen one's understanding of the philosophies behind the auspicious punty. The focus will be on shaping and temperature, the two integral components in making a good punty. We will discuss and explore the various types of punties and the purpose they serve. From the standard ' dome' punty to the specifically implemented 'sculpture' punty, students will experience first-hand the correct procedure in making these punties successfully. Furthermore, addressing the proper ways of attaching specific punties to the pieces they were designed for.

Title: Glassblowing 2B

Description:

Direction For Glassblowers
5 week series
This course is designed to further one’s understanding, through practice; the skills, techniques, and forms executed in 2A. Students will expand their vocabulary further with the glass by working with optic molds and learn how to apply color effectively in a variety of fashions. You will take advantage of this time to address any problems related to your glass blowing or difficulties encountered in the execution of a piece. This class will prepare the student to be comfortable and confident in operating the kiln controls, lighting up the glory holes, garage and turning off and on color ovens. There will be dialog pertaining to acquiring the appropriate tools for one’s own specific needs.

Description:

Confidence & Problem Solving For Glasssblowers
4 week series
This course was created to gear the student toward acquiring a confident relationship with the studio and a professional approach to implementing their work in the hot shop. This experience will provide a confidence building experience for the student through guidance in their areas of concentration and interest. At this point in a student’s experience level we invite them to rent our facility to explore their individual pursuits in the medium of glass. The class provides an atmosphere conducive for the development of ideas, as well as an arena for the student to receive assistance in working through advanced problems they encounter and answer any questions that arise. There is also emphasis on team building, creating an opportunity to network with your peers.

Students will start by executing the basic ‘drop neck’ bottle, and then advance to implementing more advanced and versatile techniques, such as the ‘pulled neck’ bottle form.  Various shapes will be covered with an emphasis on form, function, proportion, and overall aesthetic.

Title: Advanced Goblet Class

Description:

Advanced Stemware: Form, Function, and Proportion
5 week series
Coarse Level: Intemediate/Advanced
This class will introduce basic concepts of stemware. Focusing on effectively crafting elegant forms considering their proportions. A range of techniques will be discussed, demonstrated, and practiced; starting from building a goblet off the pipe, to the garage assemblage of goblets. Optic mold use will also be explored to accentuate shapes: from the simple optic twist to the “mezzo stampo” technique. We will execute and discuss the concepts related to the implementation of the goblet. Students will gain a better proportional perspective by taking the bell’s shape into consideration, its aesthetic value, and functional uses. We will explore the variety of options available when considering the design of the stem, ending with decisions pertaining to the size and shape of the foot. This intensive focuses on finely tuning one’s process from approach to execution with an understanding of the desired outcome

Title: Introduction to Fusing & Slumping - 4 Week Series

Description:

This class will cover the basics of how to cut and shape sheet class while considering aesthetic decisions of layout. The class will explore the use of color and texture along with joining form and functionality. This is the perfect class for beginners and novices of glass. No experience necessary. You will leave this class with an understanding of melting and forming sheet class and perhaps a couple nice plates, bowls or other forms.

Class: 110 Shop:WAR

Title: Introduction to Kiln Casting

Description:

This class will explore techniques for molding objects and casting glass in a kiln. Students will learn how to make molds of existing objects, as well as modeling new ones from clay and wax. Once objects have been cast in glass, various cold working processes will be demonstrated that can further change the form and surface of the piece. The six-week class will include discussions about the scientific aspects of the processes that are being used and exposure to the work of artists utilizing similar techniques. Students are encouraged to bring objects to mold, drawings, ideas, and enthusiasm.

This class will briefly delve into the world of kiln fused glass. Day one, students will learn the basics of cutting sheet glass, designing patterns in glass powders and colors and using a kiln to fuse the sheets together. Title: Introduction to Flame Working For Fusing - Terry Ow-Wing

Description:

This class is geared for essentially all levels of students looking to incorporate flameworking and fusing. Students will focus on implementing glass components with the torch and introduce them into their fused work. Glass elements such as cane will be made in both the kiln and by using the torch. Essentially drawing with hot glass. Properties of glass and technical information will be explained and practiced, including firing and annealing schedules. This class promises to be fun and creative.

Class: 210 Shop:WAR

Title: Next Steps in Kiln Casting - Gina Zetts

Description:

Description:  Students will build on their knowledge of mold making as they explore more intricate and complex forms to cast in glass.  Emphasis will be placed on planning and intent as students create one or several pieces based on their ideas. Different molding materials, including plaster and silicone, will be used for casting multiples in wax, which can also be utilized for fabrication and carving. Drawing will be a necessity as students investigate proportion and placement of form before it is cast in glass.
Previous experience with mold making and wax working required.

Six weeks- one six-hour class per week.

Title: Introduction to Cold Working and Safety

Description:

After gaining an understanding of how to implement work in the Hot Shop, it's time to become acquainted with our cold working facilities. This intensive will provide students with the necessary understanding to safely work with our cold working equipment. Students are invited to bring any pieces to class, from drinking glasses to sculpture, to work on. Using the proper progression of equipment students will achieve their intended results. Students will be versed in the use of the lathe, glass belt sander and glass chop-saw.
